MPP Ted Arnott aims to become Speaker of Legislature
Wellington—Halton Hills – The race to become Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario includes a familiar face: Wellington—Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott. Mr. Arnott informed his legislative colleagues of his interest in serving as Speaker on November 8 th . Pointing to his 17 years' experience as an MPP, Mr. Arnott made the case for his candidacy:
“Presiding over the Ontario Legislature is no easy task,” he said. “I believe my experience has prepared me to serve effectively in this capacity.”
MPPs will elect their Speaker by secret ballot on Wednesday, November 28 th . Three Liberal MPPs—Michael Brown, Steve Peters and David Zimmer—have also expressed interest in the job.
“The Speaker must preside impartially over all proceedings of the House,” explained Mr. Arnott, who cited his record of working constructively with MPPs of all parties. “It's about setting aside partisanship for the greater good of Ontario,” he added.
At the same time, Mr. Arnott is realistic about his chances. Given the Liberals' 71-seat majority, with the Progressive Conservative Party holding 26 seats and the New Democratic Party holding 10, it will be difficult for anyone outside the governing party to become Speaker.
“Despite the odds, we will have a secret ballot. I have served as an Assistant Speaker for four years, and have demonstrated a commitment to impartiality,” said Mr. Arnott.
Proposals put forward by Mr. Arnott include a plan to promote improved decorum in the Legislature; to monitor and improve security in the Legislative Precinct; and to complete the needed renovations to the exterior of the Legislative Building, the seat of the Government of Ontario, to ensure that it stands tall for future generations.
