MPP Arnott tells McGuinty Government to share gas tax with rural Ontario
With gasoline prices hovering well above a dollar a litre, MPP Ted Arnott is renewing his call on the McGuinty Liberal Government to stop excluding small town and rural Ontario from their fair share of gas tax revenues.
For every litre of gas Ontarians buy, they pay 14.7 cents in Provincial tax. That amounts to $7.35 in provincial gas tax on a 50-litre fill up. The McGuinty Government has given cities with transit systems a portion of the gas tax, but the Liberals have left rural Ontario out in the cold.
“The price of gas is a big issue for people in Waterloo, Wellington and Halton Hills,” Mr. Arnott said. “But what's worse is the discrimination against rural Ontario on the sharing of the gas tax.”
“The Federal Government shares a portion of their gas tax with all municipalities, large and small. It's time that the McGuinty Government afforded the same respect to rural communities,” Mr. Arnott stated.
Mr. Arnott is encouraging people who agree that rural Ontario should also receive a share of the Provincial gas tax, as urban municipalities do, to contact Premier Dalton McGuinty by mail: at Room 281, Main Legislative Building, Queen's Park, Toronto Ontario M7A 1A4 or by e-mail: dmcguinty.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org
