Verbal spin and avoidance by Dalton McGuinty at odds with Lottery Minister’s written word, says MPP Arnott

Calling on Dalton McGuinty to account for the roles and responsibilities of the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal, Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott directed his concerns about the lottery scandal to the Premier during Question Period in the Ontario Legislature on April 3rd.

Mr. Arnott asked the Premier to describe the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal’s responsibilities vis-à-vis the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Not satisfied with the Premier’s lack of a response, Mr. Arnott read from a letter by Minister Caplan that was published in the Annual Report of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp for 2004/05. In that letter, the Minister referred to himself as being responsible for giving direction to the OLGC.

“Either he’s at arms length or he’s not, clearly he thinks he is responsible for the OLGC,” Mr. Arnott said. He then asked the Premier: “That being the case, how could you not call for his resignation, when there has been such a serious breach of the public trust?”

The Premier refused to answer the substance of the question.

“The verbal spin by the Premier in the House is clearly at odds with the Minister’s written word,” Mr. Arnott said later. “The Minister must resign.”
