MPP Arnott tables bill to exempt all child and booster seats from retail sales tax

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott introduced a Private Member’s Bill in the Ontario Legislature on May 6, 2004. His bill would amend the Retail Sales Tax Act to ensure a sales tax exemption for all children’s car and booster seats.

“If the Government is going to compel parents to buy booster seats for children the least they can do is make sure that all car seats for kids are exempted from provincial sales tax,” Mr. Arnott said.

Mr. Arnott tabled his Bill following a recent announcement by the Minister of Transportation outlining his intention to make booster seats mandatory for children up to a weight of 80 pounds (36 kg), a height of 4 ft 10 inches (145 cm), or maximum age of eight years.

The provincial budget is scheduled for May 18th. Mr. Arnott will be calling upon the Minister of Finance to include this provision to support families in the budget.
