Waterloo-Wellington Transportation Issues
Raised During Question Period

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott continued his campaign to improve transportation in his riding during Question Period in the Ontario Legislature on April 21st. Asking three different questions, he demanded answers on the status of Waterloo Region’s Light-Rail Transit proposal, Highway 7 between Guelph and Kitchener, and Highway 6 from Fergus to Mount Forest.

“I wasn’t exactly reassured by the responses of the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal and the Minister of Transportation,” Mr. Arnott stated afterwards. “At best, both Ministers were non-committal.”

In reply to Mr. Arnott’s question on the Waterloo transit project, Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan gave no specific reassurance of provincial government support or commitment. However, in a later statement, Mr. Caplan seemed to suggest an announcement would soon be made supporting Ottawa’s transit system. Premier Dalton McGuinty represents the provincial riding of Ottawa South.

“We will not accept our area being shortchanged while the Premier’s riding benefits from political favouritism,” Mr. Arnott said.

Later during Question Period, Mr. Arnott inquired about the status of the new Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph, and needed repairs to Highway 6 between Fergus to Mount Forest.

“Instead of answering my questions, the Minister tried to divert attention by questioning where I’d been when he visited our area almost three months ago. It was, quite frankly, a bizarre reply to a serious question,” Mr. Arnott stated.

Mr. Arnott intends to continue to advocate for the transportation projects identified in the Waterloo-Wellington Transportation Action Plan.
