MPP Ted Arnott Calls on Minister to Proceed With New Health Care Facility in Wellesley Township

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott has called upon Health Minister Tony Clement to approve and fund a community health centre in the Township of Wellesley. He raised the issue during Question Period in the Ontario Legislature on June 12, 2003.

Mr. Arnott highlighted the proposal to establish a community health centre in Wellesley Township that would operate as a satellite of the Woolwich Community Health Centre. Mr. Arnott’s question follows a meeting that he arranged for representatives of the Woolwich Community Health Centre and of the Township of Wellesley officials with Mr. Clement that took place on April 22nd.

“I am encouraged by Minister Clement’s response and interest in the health care needs of the Township of Wellesley and his efforts to work with us,” Mr. Arnott said. “This is about providing the residents of the Township with access to quality health care, and it’s an absolute priority for me as their Member of Provincial Parliament.”

In his reply to Mr. Arnott’s question in the Legislature, Health Minister Tony Clement acknowledged the merits of the proposal and the individuals who have brought the health centre proposal forward:

“In fact, I did have the meeting, to which the honourable member referred, on April 22, and I want to say in this House that their presentation was extremely impressive. They made a very sound case, and of course we're taking a very serious look at the proposal. I don't have an announcement to make today in this chamber, but I want to tell the honourable member that I believe his advocacy and the excellent program that was brought to my attention can help us move forward when it comes to primary care in his community and make the right decisions on behalf of his community, as we are seeking to do for the people of Ontario,” the Minister stated in response to Mr. Arnott.

Mr. Arnott concluded afterwards by thanking the people from Waterloo-Wellington who are working with him on this initiative.

“My thanks go out to the representatives of Wellesley Township and of the Woolwich Community Health Centre for their hard work to date and success in presenting the facts to the Minister, an achievement he has acknowledged in the House. Working together for the future of health care in Wellesley Township, it’s my hope that the Government will approve our proposal in the near future,” Mr. Arnott concluded.
