Eves Government Invests in Waterloo Region’s Public Transit System

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott is pleased that the Province of Ontario will invest $1.5 million into Waterloo Region’s public transit system to help replace and refurbish their buses.

“I am pleased that our Government has provided Waterloo Region with this funding to help support the improvement of its public transit system,” said Mr. Arnott. “Building a strong transportation network is paramount for the safe and healthy growth and development of our communities.”

The funding is to be allocated under the Ontario Transit Renewal Program, which funds bus replacement and major bus refurbishment that would extend the life of a bus for a minimum of six years.

“Every day millions of people in Ontario rely on transit to get them to work, school or play,” said Transportation Minister Norm Sterling. “By upgrading existing and ageing transit fleets, we will be able to keep our transit systems moving quickly and efficiently.”

This announcement is part of the Provincial Government’s $3.25 billion, 10-year transit plan for Ontario. The Government has committed to sharing up to one-third of eligible municipal transit renewal costs through its Ontario Transit Renewal Program, a program that is dedicating $103 million to 47 municipalities in 2003.
