MPP Arnott Encourages Local MPs to
Support Position Taken by Martin and Forget $1.3
Billion Charge to Ontario

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott has commended Paul Martin for his recent comment stating that the Chretien Government should not send Ontario a bill for $1.3 billion due to reported federal accounting errors made in the 1990s. Mr. Arnott is also urging local federal MPs to take that position and support Ontario’s interests.

“I was very pleased to read in The Globe and Mail that Paul Martin supports keeping the money in Ontario for priorities like education and health care,” said Mr. Arnott.

“The federal government is talking about taking back a considerable amount of money from the people of Ontario and that would impact on our ability to finance important programs like health care, education and the environment. There should be time for further discussion on this issue, and I am hopeful that Lynn Myers and other federal MPs from this area will speak up on behalf of Ontario and support the position that Mr. Martin has taken,” he added.

Following media reports that Federal Finance Minster John Manley is calling for repayment after $3.4 billion of income taxes was erroneously overpaid to the provinces, Paul Martin was reported in The Globe and Mail on September 6th as stating:

“I would have preferred that the federal government not benefit from its own mistake, that in fact the money be returned on a per capita basis to all of the provinces for health care and education. But obviously there was a difference of opinion on that.”
