Arnott Plans to Introduce Bill to Include
City of Kitchener in Name of Riding
Waterloo-Wellington
MPP Ted Arnott is planning to introduce a Bill in the
Legislative Assembly of Ontario to include the City
of Kitchener in the name of his riding. If passed into
law, the new riding would be called Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener.
His
Bill, which he intends to introduce in the Legislature
when it resumes sitting later this month, is entitled
the Representation Amendment Act (Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener
Exception), 2002. In changing the name, the bill would
create an exception under the existing Ontario law wherein
the names of provincial electoral districts are currently
identical to federal electoral districts.
“The
City of Kitchener makes up a significant portion of
my riding. The riding is large and diverse, it has small
towns, rural areas and a significant urban component
in the City of Kitchener. To more fully represent that
diversity in the name of this great riding, I believe
it’s important to include Kitchener,” said Mr. Arnott.
“If
the new boundaries recommended by the federal government
proceed, the Kitchener portion of our riding will grow
larger in the years ahead,” Mr. Arnott added.
Ted
Arnott was nominated on September 10, 2002 to run again
in the next provincial election. Mr. Arnott is 39 years
old and was first elected 12 years ago to the Ontario
Legislature in 1990 representing the riding of Wellington.
He was re-elected again in 1995 and again in 1999, that
time representing the riding of Waterloo-Wellington.
