Arnott Tables Bill in Legislature to Include Kitchener
in Name of his Riding
Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott has introduced a
Bill in the Ontario Legislature to change the name of
his riding to make specific reference to his constituents
in the City of Kitchener. If passed, the new name of
the riding would become Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener.
He
tabled the Private Member’s Bill in the Legislature
on October 3, 2002. The Bill is entitled the Representation
Amendment Act (Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener Exception),
2002.
“Kitchener
is a major city in the province, it makes up a significant
portion of my riding and I believe that its name must
be represented in the name of this riding,” said Mr.
Arnott.
“The
Kitchener part of my riding is growing and vibrant,
and I have enjoyed representing constituents from the
City since 1999. With my Bill, I also believe that we
can raise the level of awareness for my constituents
from Kitchener - especially new residents – with regard
to who they should contact with any ideas or problems
involving the Ontario Government,” he stated.
“From
Palmerston to Punkeydoodle’s Corners, I have the honour
of representing the greatest riding in Ontario. My Bill
to include the City of Kitchener in the name and call
the riding ‘Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener’ will enhance
my ability to represent and fight for all of my constituents
at Queen’s Park,” he added.
Based
on 2001 statistics used by Elections Canada, the population
of Waterloo-Wellington is 119,469, and of that 31,483
or just over 26 per cent are constituents from the City
of Kitchener. Under the riding boundaries proposed by
the federal government the Kitchener component would
grow in the years ahead and the population of Waterloo-Wellington
would be 110,454, and of that 43,762 or about 40 cent
would be from the City of Kitchener.
In
changing the name to Waterloo-Wellington-Kitchener,
Mr. Arnott’s bill would create an exception under the
existing Ontario law wherein the names of provincial
electoral districts are currently identical to federal
electoral districts.
