MPP Ted Arnott to Hold Media Conference on His Private Member’s Bill 30, the Volunteer Fire Fighters Employment Protection Act

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott has called a media conference on Bill 30, a bill to protect ‘Double Hatter’ fire fighters. Double-hatters are usually full-time firefighters who work for a city department, but also serve as volunteer firefighters in their off-hours in their home communities. The professional firefighters' union has been threatening these firefighters with the loss of their full-time jobs if they refuse to quit as volunteers.

Bill 30 passed Second Reading on June 6, 2002, had public hearings at committee, and was received back in the Legislature in its amended form. It is awaiting Third Reading.

The following individuals are scheduled to join Mr. Arnott, make a presentation and take questions on THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2002, beginning at 12:45 p.m. in the Queen’s Park Media Studio:

Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga

Raised a question in support of Bill 30, to the Minister of Public Safety and Security during the Ministers’ Forum at the Association of Municipalities Conference in August 2002. As Chair of the Large Urban Mayor’s Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO), Mrs. McCallion signed a resolution passed by LUMCO supporting Mr. Arnott’s Bill.

Tim Lee, Double Hatter fire fighter

Works as a professional fire fighter in Whitby, he refused to resign his volunteer position in Little Britain. His union has “convicted” him for volunteering and has given him 14 days to resign as a volunteer or they will take action to have him expelled from his union, and he would then stand to lose his full time job as a fire fighter.

Dave Thompson, President, Fire Fighter’s Association of Ontario

The Association of Volunteer Fire Fighters represents Ontario’s volunteer fire departments, fire companies and volunteer fire fighters.
