in recreation infrastructure benefits Wellesley
LINWOOD
– The residents of the Township of Wellesley will soon
see the construction of the Linwood Community Sports
Park through an investment announced today under the
Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program.
This
investment will make an important contribution to the
quality of life in the community of Wellesley. Lynn
Myers, MP for Waterloo–Wellington, Ted Arnott, MPP for
Waterloo–Wellington, and Doug Bergman, Mayor of the
Township of Wellesley, announced the investment today.
The
Township of Wellesley will construct the Linwood Community
Sports Park, which will consist of a community centre,
sports park and trails. The community centre will include
an assembly hall, meeting room and a covered patio.
The sports park will include two baseball diamonds,
basketball courts, soccer pitches, children's playground
equipment and a picnic shelter. In addition, the Linwood
Cenotaph will be relocated to the sports park, which
will make the monument more accessible for public ceremonies.
A community trail will also be constructed around the
property with a link to the Kissing Bridge Trail, part
of the Trans-Canada Trail. The Linwood Community Sports
Park will improve the quality and variety of recreation
facilities in the region. Construction is expected to
be complete by 2004.
The
Government of Canada through Industry Canada and the
Government of Ontario through SuperBuild will each contribute
up to $229,345 to the project. The Township of Wellesley
will invest the balance of the project’s total eligible
cost of $1,491,870.
“Local
recreational centres are key to building strong and
healthy communities, and the construction of this sports
park will not only benefit local residents, but also
the surrounding region,” said Mr. Myers. “I am pleased
to announce this important $229,345 Canada–Ontario Infrastructure
Program investment on behalf of the Government of Canada.”
“The
council, staff and residents of Wellesley Township deserve
enormous credit for pursuing this exciting recreation
project,” said Mr. Arnott. “I was glad to be able to
support it and I am delighted that the province is assisting
with the costs of the new Linwood Community Sports Park.”
“The
construction of the Linwood Community Sports Park will
have a great impact on the well-being of our community
and improve the quality of life for our residents,”
said Mr. Bergman. “We are pleased that this project
can now move forward.”
This
is one of a series of matching federal and provincial
investments to help municipalities improve the quality
of life of their residents through essential infrastructure
projects totalling more than $945 million to date in
Ontario. More announcements under the Canada–Ontario
Infrastructure Program are coming.
