Investment in recreation infrastructure benefits Centre Wellington

FERGUS – The residents of the Township of Centre Wellington will soon see the expansion of the Fergus Community Centre through an investment announced today under the Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program.

This investment will make an important contribution to the quality of life in the community of Centre Wellington. Lynn Myers, MP for Waterloo–Wellington, Ted Arnott, MPP for Waterloo–Wellington, and George Pinkney, Mayor of the Township of Centre Wellington, announced the investment today.

The Township of Centre Wellington will expand the Fergus Community Centre to include an indoor pool, expanded fitness area, and a second ice pad. The improved facility will become a focal point for recreational services in Centre Wellington, provide access to year-round swimming opportunities, and provide more ice time for the development of girls’, women’s and seniors’ programs. The new facilities will foster local and regional economic development by furnishing appropriate space for special events, festivals and shows. Construction will begin in the fall of 2003.

The Government of Canada through Industry Canada and the Government of Ontario through SuperBuild will each contribute up to $1,200,000 to the project. The Township of Centre Wellington will invest the balance of the project’s total eligible cost of $10,000,000.

“The expansion of the Fergus Community Centre to include an indoor pool, second ice rink and larger fitness facilities is a wonderful sports and recreational infrastructure project THAT will greatly improve the recreational services in this area,” said Mr. Myers. “I am pleased to announce this $1,200,000 Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program investment on behalf of the Government of Canada.”

“The Council, staff and residents of Centre Wellington Township deserve enormous credit for pursuing this exciting recreation project,” said Mr. Arnott. “I was glad to be able to support it and I am delighted the province is assisting with the costs of the expansion of the Fergus Community Centre.”

“This project is essential to our community, and will significantly enhance the quality of life in Centre Wellington,” said Mr. Pinkney. “We are pleased to partner with the federal and provincial governments on this important community initiative.”

This is one of a series of matching federal and provincial investments to help municipalities improve the quality of life of their residents through essential infrastructure projects totalling more than $944 million to date in Ontario. More announcements under the Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program are coming.
