Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott Welcomes
Bill to Extend Red Light Cameras in Waterloo Region

Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott is pleased that Transportation Minister Norm Sterling introduced Bill 149 in the Ontario Legislature on June 26. If passed into law, the Bill would enable the Red Light Camera Pilot Project to be continued for two more years in Waterloo Region.

Mr. Arnott raised the issue with the Minister on behalf of Waterloo Region and the Canadian Automobile Association during Question Period on June 17.

Red light cameras are used to snap a picture of the licence plate of a vehicle that runs a red light and enable the police to lay a charge for that offence.

"I am pleased that the Minister agrees that municipalities should be able to continue with this project beyond the termination date of November 20, 2002. I hope that all parties in the Legislature will support the rapid passage of this Bill," said Mr. Arnott.

When he raised the issue during Question Period, Mr. Arnott cited a resolution passed by Waterloo Regional Council calling for the extension of the project, along with a letter from Anne Becker, CEO for the mid-western Ontario region of the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

The title of the legislation is: Bill 149, An Act to extend the red light cameras pilot projects to November 20, 2004, or for an indefinite period. The Regional Municipalities of Waterloo and Peel along with Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton are among those who requested the extension while the Regional Municipality of Halton has chosen to defer a decision on the extension in order to review the results.
