MPP Arnott Says Time is Now to Repair Highway 6 and add Passing Lanes from Fergus to Mount Forest

Citing a resolution passed by Wellington County Council, Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott has written a strong letter to Transportation Minister Norm Sterling asking that the Government repair Highway 6 and add passing lanes from Fergus to Mount Forest.

“County Council is right to take action and point out that this section of the Highway from Fergus to Mount Forest needs repair, and the time to do the work is now,” declared Mr. Arnott.

“Their resolution also raised the fact that much of Wellington County relies on Highway 6 as our main route to the 401. As such, it’s important to our economy and quality of life. In my view, the Government also needs to build passing lanes on that portion of the Highway,” he added.

In his letter to the Minister, Mr. Arnott indicated that in the early 1990s as MPP for Wellington, he raised the issue of safety and the need for passing lanes on Highway 6 repeatedly, with the support of the County and area municipalities. He also noted that his predecessor Jack Johnson first proposed the idea.

The Ministry of Transportation conducted a study and agreed to upgrade the road. Passing lanes were built from the City of Guelph to Fergus and the Highway was four -laned from Guelph’s city limits to County Road 7.

“It’s time to finish the job,” said Mr. Arnott.
