MPP Arnott Raises New Home for New Hamburg Family in Legislature, Recognizes Habitat for Humanity, Local Sponsor and Family
Waterloo-Wellington MPP Ted Arnott rose in the Legislature on May 28, 2001 to recognize the good works of Habitat for Humanity of Waterloo Region for their plans to build a home in New Hamburg – a first for this community.
In his statement, he raised the successful approach Habitat for Humanity has brought to families in Waterloo Region and he congratulated the Abarca family who will have a new home in New Hamburg which is expected to be built in August. Mr. Arnott also thanked a local sponsor for taking a huge part in making this project possible.
“Pat McLean, Woolwich township councillor and executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Waterloo region, has advised me that Habitat for Humanity's goal is the elimination of poverty housing. They are doing this for people with strong coordination, public support, work by volunteers, what they call "sweat equity" and homeowner training by the prospective home-owning families,” Mr. Arnott informed the House.
Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity has developed 34 homes with families in Waterloo region. Three are being built this year, and five are projected for next year.
The home to be built in New Hamburg is being sponsored by Doug Wagner, a Ross Dixon financial services adviser. Mr. Arnott thanked Mr. Ross for his significant contribution to making “…this dream of a home a reality for the Abarca family.”
Mr. Arnott closed his address to the Legislature by recounting personal experiences with Habitat for Humanity and by inviting support for this organization.
“Last month, my family and I had an opportunity to offer our support and to meet many of the supporters of this project at the Habitat for Humanity fish fry in New Hamburg. Their compassion and understanding of the pride and importance of home ownership for families is inspiring to all of us, and I encourage everyone to help Habitat for Humanity give a hand up to people in our communities across this great province.
Mr. Arnott's provincial riding of Waterloo-Wellington includes all of Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich Townships, a southwestern part of the City of Kitchener, and much of Wellington County.
